Employees who work outdoors have to be extremely cautious in the winter because there are so many threats and risks of injuries. When snow, ice, and rain accumulates on the ground or on the floor, employees are always at risk of slipping, falling, and getting seriously injured.

Thankfully, there are some winter workplace safety practices that you can implement in your workplace to keep everyone safe. If snow and ice accumulate around your workplace this winter, we suggest that you encourage all of your employees to follow these safety guidelines:

  • Follow the weather report so you will always be up-to-date with the current weather updates
  • Wear boots that will not slide, slip, or skid across the floor
  • If snow or ice finds its way into the employees’ work areas, someone should make sure it is cleaned and cleared as soon as possible
  • Make sure that overhead areas do not have holes in them that can result in water making its way inside
  • Make sure the building is properly lit so any accumulation can be spotted easily
  • Make sure the ice, snow, or rain that accumulates on the walkways are cleared
  • Use salt or sand on the entry areas in order to minimize the chances of someone slipping and falling
  • Make sure everyone knows where the cleaning supplies are just in case someone needs to clean an area
  • Make sure everyone knows where they can find a mop, shovel, etc.

We know that working in the winter is not everyone’s favorite thing to do, but everyone can be safer if the proper precautions are enforced and followed. With the right safety guidelines, you can avoid any unfortunate accidents and injuries.
