6 Ideas to Get a Fresh Mindset for Finding a Job This Year

January 5, 2021 | Career Blog

This year has no doubt been an unusual one. Everyone has had to make major alterations to the way they go about their daily lives because of the pandemic, and if you’re looking for a new job, these changes are a major factor. A survey done by Morning Consult commissioned by Amazon found that around 61% of US job seekers, including people who are looking for new roles and people who are unemployed, are exploring new industries because of the pandemic. The job search is already a challenge you have to get yourself in the mindset for, and the 2020 developments only add an extra layer of complexity. That’s why it’s important that you continue to talk to yourself in a way that is inspiring, keep finding the will to make needed changes, and reward yourself for all the small wins. Here are some ideas to help you get in that fresh mindset for finding a job this year.

Staying Calm & Get Inspired

Your biggest enemies during a job search are fear, disappointment, lethargy, and lack of confidence. Start by telling yourself that those things aren’t real, that you create them on your own, and if you keep moving forward you will defeat them. Below are 5 ways to help you avoid those feelings altogether.

1. Make a Really Specific To-Do List

Giving yourself too much to do can quickly become overwhelming. Make sure that your goals are easy for you to accomplish and that you give yourself reasonable deadlines for each. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Making alterations to your resume based on the positions you’re applying for.
  • How many positions you apply to a day.
  • How many times you check your email for responses.
  • The efforts you put out to your friends, family, and on social media.

2. Have a Schedule

This should coincide with your to-do list and include the things you need to do daily to help you remain healthy and calm. Make sure you’re scheduling yourself time to work on your job search during the time of day where you feel the most clearheaded and productive. For some, this might mean getting all of your other needs and responsibilities out of the way. For others, getting started right away in the morning might feel best.

3. Days off & Days on

Allow yourself one or two days off a week so you can have a little break. If you are really productive on your ‘on’ days, you can truly relax on the days you’ve afforded yourself some R & R.

4. Look Up Your Role Models

Career paths are rarely linear. It can be really misleading when you read job descriptions and requirements, as though everyone in the field followed that path before they became successful. Actually most people made their own unique loops and jumps to get where they are today. Looking up your role models and seeing how they arrived where they are will help you to stay motivated and know that everyone’s path is different.

5. Make a List of Dream Jobs

What is it about your dream jobs and the career path you are pursuing that is appealing to you? As you make your list, include that information besides each dream job and then consider what other jobs may also provide a similar appeal. This will allow you to keep an open mind while also prioritizing the things that are truly important to you.

6. Seek Assistance From The Experts

Doing all of this on your own takes a lot of effort, and who knows if you’re actually looking in all of the right places? Staffing agencies are available to people like you who are in need of a job and some guidance on the best options available to you. Agencies are free for job searchers, and also provide career path assistance and interview preparation help. Using the assistance of a staffing agency will take all of the searching and evaluating off of your plate. Let them be your advisor, advocate, and support so you can get to work in a job you like quickly.
