The Different Areas of Work
When applying for a job in the warehouse, you will want to make sure you are applying to the area that best aligns with your past experience and skill set. Here are the different areas to consider in your search.
General Warehouse Positions
Annual Wage: $34,000-$50,000
This area contains all of the entry-level and easily trainable positions. The usual tasks include:
- Receiving shipments
- Sorting materials
- Assembling products
- Running quality control
Though these responsibilities appear to be simple to accomplish, they are essential to maintain the flow of the company. Many warehouses hire temporary workers in this department for the busy seasons. If you are looking to pick up side work for some quick money here and there, this is one of the departments you will want to consider.
Skilled Warehouse Positions
Annual Wage: $36,000-$63,000
The next tier up are positions that require a little extra skill and knowledge. Positions in this area related to the following may also have temporary work available:
- Forklift Operator
General workers who have been with the company long enough to show promise or commitment may be trained by other skilled workers and take on such positions themselves. If you really want to move up in the industry, putting in that extra effort to learn new skills will earn you appreciation from your supervisors and eventually open up the possibility for promotion.
Operation Management Positions
Annual Wage: $80,000-$160,000
The operations management team oversees all processes and works to fix any issues within production. Some examples of this include:
- Evaluating benefits of new technology.
- Creating new systems to make the process move smoother and keep it more cost effective.
- Identifying errors in production or broken parts that are slowing down the team.
- Training employees on current and new systems.
These employees are usually full-time with a typical schedule of 9 to 5. Responsibilities include:
- Clerical Work
- Inventory Management
- Safety Training
Such positions usually require a degree, but the right candidate can be promoted to the position after working as an assistant in the department.
