May 24, 2016 | Career Blog

When you are looking for a job, it is important to be pretty strategic about everything you do. This includes taking a step back and looking at the things you post on social media. Many employers are now searching social media sites owned by applicants in order to get to know them better. For this reason, there are some definite social media do’s and don’ts to follow when you are looking for a job.

Do: Have Profiles Available

It is tempting to completely avoid social media altogether while you are job hunting. However, there are actually some pretty significant benefits. For example, job postings are found daily on LinkedIn and this site could connect you with a potential employer.

Don’t: Be Negative or Unflattering

Keep those negative and unflattering posts to yourself. They can wind up keeping you from getting a job. Instead, post things that are witty and relevant to your job search or occupation.

Do: Have a Professional Profile Picture

Avoid using a photo that is promiscuous or unflattering. Instead, choose a photo that showcases your professional side.

Don’t: Allow Tags to Inappropriate Content

You can’t control what your friends tag you in, but you can go through the posts and photos you are tagged in and remove them if necessary.

Do: Keep your Profile Up-To-Date

When you are job hunting, it is always best to keep all your information up-to-date on social media. This helps employers get the most accurate information about you.

Don’t: Talk Negatively about Former Employers

Just as you would never talk badly about your current or former employer in a job interview, you won’t want to include these comments on social media.
